Episode 10 – Garrett Boorojian and Tim Brando discuss relationship building in a team environment.
Tim, an incredibly successful sports broadcaster, and Garrett talked about their mutual friends and connections, from the ESPN alumni community, who positively impacted their lives, from the late John Saunders to Lou Holtz to the late Howard Schwab. Tim’s current broadcasting friend and colleague at FOX Sports, and a former Super Bowl Champion, Spencer Tillman, reminds Tim so much of John.
The earliest broadcast Tim did was back in 1971, when he assisted his father on a high school football broadcast – Tim was 14 years told at the time. The famous sportscaster Curt Gowdy was one of his closest mentors. Tim and his wife Terri moved from Louisianna to Connecticut when Tim joined ESPN in 1986. They moved back to Louisiana in 1990 and he remained at ESPN until 1994. From ESPN to present day, Tim takes pride in the fact that he worked at several major networks (ESPN, CBS Sports, Raycom Sports, SiriusXM, and FOX Sports) and learned how to be an “asset” and adapt to “change” by taking “a vibrant, and fresh approach” throughout his career.
Tim talked a lot about his key relationships in the industry. He highlighted the three types of relationships a person has in his or her life. Tim adds if you have five people who are “confidants” then you have a “full life.” He also emphasized the importance of trust, team, and influence as well as other relationship building qualities in the sports broadcasting industry.
