Episode 61 – Garrett Boorojian and Larry Rothschild discuss relationship building in a team environment.
A Chicago native, Larry explained how Major League Baseball has changed with analytics but relationship building has stayed the same. Larry agrees with Joe Maddon that there’s a place for analytics, but it can’t dominate the game to the point where it significantly hinders the development of coaches and players from the minors to the majors. Throughout his professional career as a coach and manager, Larry enjoyed coaching / mentoring players individually, in a one–to–one relationship building capacity, within the culture of an organization (i.e. MLB franchise).
Whether it’s pitching or hitting, Larry provides a break down of what he believes MLB franchises now emphasize as a barometer of success – which Larry believes is the wrong approach. Larry says it shouldn’t be about who can hit the most home runs or who can throw the fastest pitch – because that leads to serious and unnecessary players’ injuries and shorter careers. Hence, Larry believes there’s an overall negative effect on Major League Baseball.
Larry is a true historian of the game – Whether it was coaching under legendary managers Lou Piniella and Jim Leyland, or managing the Devil Rays and some of the game’s greatest hitters from Wade Boggs to Fred McGriff, Larry is another MLB legend who’s had a front row seat to baseball history.
“Larry, welcome to the Yankees, it’s great to have you here.” – When Derek Jeter stopped taking ground balls, and walked over to shake Larry’s hand after Larry joined the Yankees in 2011.
Larry:
- Won the 1990 World Series as the MLB Bullpen Coach for the Cincinnati Reds.
- Won the 1997 World Series as the MLB Pitching Coach for the Florida Marlins.
- Was the first MLB Manager in Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ history from 1998 to 2001.
- Was the MLB Pitching Coach for the New York Yankees from 2011 to 2019.
- Was an MLB Pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.
- Played baseball collegiately at Florida State University.
- Coached in MLB for the Reds, Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Yankees, and San Diego Padres.
- Was in uniform when MLB’s Wade Boggs, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez each hit a home run for their respective 3,000th MLB hits.
